Lighting

1)This image displays low-key lighting. This because there is no large source of light and it is very minimal. Lowkey lighting is created by only using key and back light .The effect produces strong contrasts of light(the smoke) and dark(the woman)known as chiaroscuro

2)The image depicts back lighting as it comes from one side behind her face.

3)There is a binary opposition shown in the lowkey lighting. This is because the light(smoke) makes there be a sense of mystery within the extract as it covers her face. The back lighting partially reflects her as a silhouette and reflects her face features.

1)low key lighting

2)top lighting

3)The use of top lighting highlights his positioning. It makes the character look fierce and superior. This is deliberately done to contrast this character with the rain because it emphasises his power.

1) high key lighting

2)back lighting

3)There is a filler light to enhance the female character. The background is softened which juxtaposes her facial expressions due to her being scared of something

1)lowkey  lighting

2)back lighting

3)There is a sense of natural light which helps establish this picture. The two characters are happily in love and have a passion. There is binary opposition of the lighting due to there being the sun (natural light) and there being no light. The sunlight embraces the characters due to there faces glowing. The backlight helps to contract the effects of the key light making the characters appear more rounded

2)back lighting

3)Lowkey lighting is created by only using key and back lighting. The effect produces strong contrasts of light and dark ,known as chiaroscuro. The back light enchants the characters because their shadows are being portrayed.

1)lowkey lighting

2)back lighting

3)The use of lowkey lighting and back lighting makes the character seem distorted and creates a sense of horror. Her own hair blends in with the setting due to lighting. There is also a sense of old retro vibe because the colours a re all only in black and white.

1) high key lighting

2) top lighting

3)There are more filler lights in this. It makes this picture more realistic and the difference of dark and light is pronounced. The light source is artificial as it covers the whole room. The lighting beams on the characters face which causes him to glow significantly.

1)lowkey lighting

2)back light and top light

3)There is only one source of lighting and it is vey small. Its only able to cover minimal space. The setting in this location being a basement and having lowkey lighting displays horror. This is because we don't know what is lurking in the darkness(enigma code).

1)high key lighting

2)top lighting

3)The use of top lighting and filler lighting enchants these characters. This is because they are appeared as glowing characters. This is used to accentuate their features. The high key lighting makes the characters appear as much more realistic and mesmerising

2) Film noir research

Research film noir - focusing on the genre’s distinctive lighting style. Make notes on the genre and particularly the use of lighting - bullet points are fine.

-Uses high contrast
-low key techniques in order to create a shadowy dramatic and mysterious mood
-employing harsh, focused light and deep shadows
-uses hard light sources
-creating shadows with objects like venetian blinds or cookies
-Using back lights to sculp characters
-focuses on a high contrast between light and dark rather than overall brightness

3) Film noir YouTube clip analysis

In this clip there is a lot of lowkey lighting. Furthermore there is a lot of back lighting within the clip. In some cases there are filler lights which help to enchant the movie and help the characters to look much more appealing. These all shows the connotations of a film noir.
