This week's work requires Media Factsheet #69: Music Video. You'll need to log in to Google using your Greenford Google account to access this. Read the factsheet and answer the following 10 questions:


1) What is the purpose of a music video?
For marketing tools that increase visibility, promote the artist, and create memorable visual experiences. Help build fan engagement across digital platforms.

2) How has the digital age changed the production and distribution of music videos?
Shift from TV to online platforms and social media. Independent artists can now bypass labels and reach global audiences directly. Viral content plays a major role in music video success.

3) Which three major record labels are behind VEVO? What is VEVO and why was it created?Created by UMG, WMG, and SME. A platform designed to professionally distribute high‑quality music videos.

4) What are the key conventions of a music video?
Mise‑en‑scène: lighting, setting, hair, makeup.
Editing: pace, transitions, visual rhythm
Stereotypes and representation.
Audio codes.
Typography and on‑screen text.

5) How can narrative be used in music video? Give an example of a music video that uses a narrative.
Often follows Todorov’s structure: equilibrium → disequilibrium → new equilibrium. Used to tell stories that match the song’s themes.

6) What examples are provided in the factsheet for intertextuality in music videos?
Telephone (Lady Gaga & Beyoncé) → references Pulp Fiction and Thelma & Louise.
Bad Blood (Taylor Swift) → references Kill Bill and Sin City

7) Why do audiences enjoy intertextual references in media products?
Creates recognition, satisfaction, and deeper engagement. Makes the viewing experience more layered and meaningful.

8) Read the music video example analysis on page 3 of the factsheet. Select a music video of your own choice for each of the following headings and explain how each one links to the heading:
  • Conventions (movement/narrative/artist) Clear revenge narrative, fast-paced editing, action movement
  • Intertextuality Visual style inspired by action films (Kill Bill, Sin City).
  • Representation Women shown as strong and independent, though still glamorised.
  • Audience Appeals to young pop fans; celebrity cameos widen appeal.
9) Watch the video for Ice Cube's It Was A Good Day (1993). How did this video set the conventions for later hip-hop music videos?
  • Introduced the day‑in‑the‑life narrative in hip‑hop videos.

  • Emphasised urban realism and authenticity.

  • Reinforced conventions of masculinity, status, and artist centrality.

  • Strong lyric‑visual links, now common in hip‑hop.
